“Do you realize my only gay son is getting married?” an exasperated Meghna (a delightful Zarna Garg) asks the wedding planner. She isn’t satisfied with the barn he has shown her, and wants the best for her son, Naveen (Karan Soni of Deadpool fame). As Naveen and his fiancé, Jay, watch, all Jay can reflect on is how much Naveen’s mother loves him. You need to care about someone to get angry. And you only get angry about people you love.

A Nice Indian Boy is the latest directorial feature from Roshan Sethi, a Harvard Medical School-educated doctor for whom the plot is very personal. Sethi, too, is set to get married to his longtime partner. But no Indian marriage feels complete with the blessing of one’s parents. If there’s anything the global Bollywood hit Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ) taught its billions of fans, the movie isn’t over until the parents are satisfied.
