President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month in 1976, to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” This year, the month’s theme is “Black Health and Wellness,” focused on the legacy of Black doctors, nurses, midwives, and doulas, as well as mental health in the community.
