‘Made in Heaven’ Season 2 Was Well Worth the Wait

Back after four years, the cult hit that uses weddings to examine India’s societal baggage is still preachy. But we can’t stop watching.

The cast of 'Made in Heaven' Season 2 (Amazon Prime)

When the opening credits to the Amazon TV series Made in Heaven roll, you can’t help but get emotional. Shots of hennaed hands holding each other, a couple kissing during the Hora, diyas lighting a path, a red heart balloon on the beach. It’s all so romantic, reflective of one of the most diverse countries — and now the most populous — on the planet. While weddings are a big business in India, the series uses them as a lens to examine cultural dirt and baggage — such as India’s obsession with fair skin to its caste discrimination — as it follows Tara (Sobhita Dhulipala) and Karan (Arjun Mathur), friends and co-founders of a posh wedding planning business called Made in Heaven.

If, by the end of it, you feel exhausted by the moral PSAs, we wouldn’t blame you. But the show — whose second installment fans have been waiting for, for over four years — manages to win you over. This season pushes the envelope (maybe they read our review of Season 1). And though the first episode starts off especially preachy, as the series progresses, we get to meet new characters — Mona Singh as Bulbul and Trinetra Haldar Gummaraju as Meher — who light up the screen. These two women show us what relationships made in heaven look like. And, yes, maybe you’ll be flicking off a tear or two.
