When Raveena Aurora and I chatted, it was fitting she was joining our Zoom from a faraway island, where she was volunteering on a farm. While it was early morning for her, she’d already meditated for an hour and released a music video. For the singer, spiritual discipline is part of who she is.
“It just started honestly from me needing a little bit of calm on the subway for five minutes on the way from Chinatown to uptown when I was a nanny,” she recalled. “It was just five, 10 minutes of meditation.” For the now 30-year-old, those five minutes have snowballed into up to six hours of meditation a day and birthed a kind of soothing discography we didn’t know we needed. While mindfulness might be a fad for many, as she wrote on her Instagram, “I just wanna say I feel personally attacked by ‘very demure very mindful very cutesy’...for some of us this is a way of life.”
