Since it premiered last Thursday, Netflix’s reality series Indian Matchmaking has climbed in popularity to the streaming service’s top 10 and sparked conversations about dating and marriage across the world. The eight-part reality series follows multiple single millennials in India and the U.S. who have decided — or in some cases, been told by their families — to employ the services of Sima Taparia, “Mumbai’s top matchmaker,” to find a partner.
The Juggernaut contributor Ishani Nath spoke with the show’s executive producer Smriti Mundhra about creating the show, the reaction to the first season, and what’s next.
The following conversation has been edited for length and clarity. Watch the full Q&A on IGTV.
Did you anticipate that Indian Matchmaking would take off like this?
I knew it was going to be bigger than what I’m used to, but definitely did not expect it to blow up the way that it has.
